Problem / Goals |
| Problem Statement | | Goals |
| High school students at DCS, including its athletes, do not always have breakfast or choose healthy food options. | |
- The Health Promoting Schools program identifies three main areas of focus: physical activity, healthy eating, and mental health.
- The HPS committee at Delisle Composite School has chosen Healthy Eating as their focus at the school level.
- The school goal is to reduce unhealthy eating habits in students by offering healthy options and increasing education.

| Rationale / Assumptions |
| Rationales | | Assumptions |
- With obesity rates increasing by 200% since 1985, this trend does not appear to be slowing. "By 2019, it is also estimated 34.2 per cent of Canadians will be overweight, while 21.2 per cent will be obese." (Bohmann March 5, 2014) Making healthy food choices throughout life is an important skill. "Tracy Sanden, a public health nutritionist with the Regina Qu’Appelle Health Region, said the way our communities are set up also contribute to obesity. She said our communities have an 'overabundance of convenient foods' now." (Bohmann March 5, 2014)
- Schools have always played a part in educating students on health initiatives, but the need has become more pressing as the health statistics continue to falter. Statistics for the news article taken from: Memorial University study published in the Canadian Medical Association
- “In 2006, the World Health Organization identified physical activity, healthy eating and mental health programs using the Health Promoting Schools approach in schools as the most effective at changing the health and health related behaviour of school children.”
- “To enhance educational outcomes of students, since healthy students are better able to learn and students that achieve higher levels of education live healthier lives. (HPS fact sheet)
- To create the conditions that support healthy schools since schools that approach health in ways that look at the big picture and are well planned, produce better health and education outcomes than those which are mainly information based and applied only in the classroom.” (HPS fact sheet)

- The program is available to all students; does not function on a financial/economic basis
- Despite having food in the home, students come to school without having eaten breakfast. (7 year average from Delisle Elementary School indicated 70% of students will partake of morning breakfast program)
- Students will not buy fruit or vegetables from the school lunch canteen, primarily because of cost.
- Students will eat a healthy snack option when it is readily available and free.
- Program Administrator works with Public Health Region to ensure healthy snack choices.
- Some students have long daily bus rides (up to and over one hour long) to and from school.
- According to Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs, food, water, sleep, and exercise are fundamental physiological needs, which if they are not met, the individual will not achieve any higher level needs. (Wikipedia.org)

Well done Edla. You have designed your own approach to the LM and it works for me. Plenty of good detail in all aspects. I have a sense of all that goes into the program and all that influences it.
